Leading The Fight Against Cancer
Located in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains, Northwest Georgia is home to warm and friendly people and beautiful landscapes. Unfortunately, it is also home to high cancer rates! The Northwest Georgia Regional Cancer Coalition is here to help the citizens of this region fight their war on cancer!
As a nonprofit organization, the Coalition works with local hospitals and cancer centers, community groups, educational institutions, faith-based organizations, and government agencies to bring high quality resources to Northwest Georgia to ensure the best cancer care for our citizens.
Each year, the Northwest Georgia Regional Cancer Coalition funds a variety of programs and projects committed to improving the lives of cancer patients and promoting early detection of prevention for all.
The Northwest Georgia Regional Cancer Coalition leads the fight against cancer in Northwest Georgia by coordinating cancer prevention and early detection/screening for the public; educating healthcare professionals on current screening practices and pertinent cancer topics surrounding specific cancers, palliation, hospice care, tobacco counseling techniques, and the availability of patient resources; encouraging participation in clinical cancer trials, cancer and lifestyle studies, tobacco cessation and prevention activities, healthy lifestyles and fitness, coordinating health screenings, educating healthcare professionals on the latest cancer news, and promoting participation in clinical trials.
Our Mission and Vision
To develop programs of excellence in cancer-related education, communications, prevention, early detection and screening, treatment, and research in this region.
To build a model of comprehensive cancer control.
Goals and Objectives
Prevent cancer and detect existing cancers earlier.
The initiative will work to reduce the number of cancer deaths through focused education and screening efforts, with particular emphasis on the cancers that are the major causes of death. The development of a coordinated network of public and private organizations will give NW Georgians greater access to screenings.
Improve access to quality care for all Northwest Georgians with cancer.
The NWGRCC wants to ensure that basic cancer care is available close to home anywhere in NW Georgia. More advanced treatment will be available at medical centers in the regional service area, enabling NW Georgians to get quality medical care and participate in clinical trials without leaving their area.
Save more lives in the future.
Through work with medical schools and community oncologists, a mechanism will be put in place to extend and coordinate clinical trials. New detection and treatment methods and technology will contribute to the control of cancer. The cancer research efforts will be multi-institutional where possible.
Train future cancer researchers and caregivers.
The NWGRCC will support using nationally recognized standards for training future cancer clinicians and the development of new training programs for cancer caregivers. Provision will be made for continuing education for practicing clinicians.
Realize economic benefits from eradicating cancer.
Investment in research, expanded capacity and partnerships with pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies will provide quality jobs to NW Georgians and environmentally clean additions to the economy. Private funding will help support research and launch new developments with commercial potential.
On a more regional note, the NWGRCC has several objectives which it has strived to achieve since its inception in 2002:
1. Improve Access and Availability of Cancer Care
2. Optimize Cancer Control
3. Utilize Evidenced-Based Research
4. Improve Cancer and Wellness Education & Communication
5. Encourage Community Involvement
